How to prepare for JEE Mains | JEE Preparation

In this post I am going to tell you about how to prepare for JEE mains. I am covering this topic in two parts : Part 1 for those who are 12th appearing and Part 2 for those who are 12th passed. I will also tell you which books you should purchase for preparation after the two parts. So lets begin:

PART-1 How 12th appearing Prepare for JEE?

If you are a 12th appearing, then you will have your board examination in March and you probably think how to manage the two? You need to worry much about this. You can handle this easily if you keep in your mind following things:

• Don't move away from NCERT syllabus specially in Physics and Mathematics.
• Don't try to study more than your limit as it will put you in more tensile state.
• Don't compare yourself with others and don't get much serious and have tensions if you are not able to do much better in mock test of JEE or in JEE Jan attempt. 
• Don't take any chapter or unit as useless or any other unit as important. Study throughout the syllabus.
• Keep in mind that you are going to give your best in JEE.
• The most important : Don't think about what will be the final result as it is sure that from about 10 lac students only 20,000 students will make. So, don't feel unsafe if you won't make it. You will get more chances in future.

Now, I am going to explain you how to study the syllabus:

Now you should focus on your 12th syllabus as in March you are having board examinations. During your preparation, try solving NCERT problems in Physics and Chemistry as it will help you in boards as well as in JEE. What I myself learnt from JEE Jan that in JEE Mains, the questions are not of much higher levels. Instead of that, the questions are based on basics and simple application of topics which are given in NCERT. For JEE (specially Physics and Chemistry) keep in mind following things:

• Don't move away from NCERT for Physics and Chemistry as almost 80% to 90% questions in JEE from past many years are directly from NCERT with minute changes. I myself done previous year question of JEE form 2010 to 2019 and got same results.
• Don't leave easy and the chapters you think are not important and not having much concepts as there will be direct question and easy question from those chapters. I give you an example like in JEE 2020 question from EM waves was: The equation of magnetic field is given and we need to find equation of eleatric field in which all options have different amplitude of Electric field so you could easily find that by E=B/c. Like this there were many question about 5-7 questions in each subject. So, by doing so you can roughly get between 60-80 marks easily.
• Now you need to do previous year question of almost last 10 years, which you can easily get in market and don't worry you won't get a huge number of question. They would be roughly about 300 in each subject from 2009 to 2018. Now you can also do question of JEE 2019 and 2020 (JEE Mains only). By doing so you will get idea about level of JEE and get confidence. Also you will find that many questions got repeated (Believe me, It's True!!! You can check yourself).
• Don't waste time on single unit thinking it as important. For example, till last year Optics in Physics thought to have 4-5 questions in JEE, but this year this unit hardly contribute single question in JEE.

What for Mathematics?

Many students often say that Mathematics in JEE is tough, but it is not actually that much tough. The problem is that students often do only NCERT problems and they don't think beyond that and also don't think for application of problems. So what to do? Keep in mind following things:

• Firstly understand basics and all formulas of each chapter with doing all NCERT problems.
• After this, don't move to higher level books such as Ceangage as they are actually made for JEE Adv and if you try solving their problems it will consume a lot of time and mind. Also, you will not see much problems from them.
• Instead of that what you need to first do is. Simply watch some online lectures of each chapter not more than 2 hours. I recommend you Vedantu as it is free and you will find 1-2 hour lecture of each chapter on YouTube. In those lectures some previous year questions will also be discussed. So, you should try them. I myself done Geometry from Vedantu and it helped me doing questions of Geometry in JEE easily. 
• Now you should be able to do previous year questions of each chapter.
• If you still don't feel comfortable with Mathematics, then you can purchase any JEE level book such as RD Sharma, where you can find easily a number of problems to solve.

How to prepare 11th?

If you are worrying much about 11th, the please leave such thinking as now its time to prepare 12th first and also, about 60% of JEE Mains is from 12th class. Meanwhile preparing for 12th you can do some simple chapters of 11th from which min 1 question is fixed such as:

• In Mathematics: Mathematical reasoning, Statistics, Quadratic, Permutation and Combination (don't try questions other than previous year type), Probability etc.
• In Chemistry: Structure of atom, Basic concepts of chemistry, ideal gas equation,  Periodic table, Hydrogen, S-block, Environmental Chemistry (Must Do) etc.
• In Physics: Units and measurement, Motion in straight line, Gas Laws, Oscillation and wave (Previous year type only), Thermal properties of matter (only basics), Mechanical Properties of solid, liquid and gas (Only Basics and formulas) etc.

Now, you can do as many as chapter from above ones till your exams if you got time. Till 20-25 March your board examination will be done and after that you should revise all the chapters you studied first and then if you have time you can try doing other chapter.   

PART-2 How 12th Passed Prepare for JEE?

12th passed students must keep in mind following things before moving ahead:

• You are having more time than 12th appearing as you are not having tension for boards. So, give your most of time for JEE.
• Don't move away from NCERT syllabus specially in Physics and Mathematics.
• Don't try to study more than your limit as it will put you in more tensile state.
• Don't compare yourself with others and don't get much serious and have tensions if you are not able to do much better in mock test of JEE or in JEE Jan attempt. 
• Don't take any chapter or unit as useless or any other unit as important. Study throughout the syllabus.

As most students fell Mathematics as tough subject, while doing preparation for Mathematics keep in mind following things:

• Firstly understand basics and all formulas of each chapter with doing all NCERT problems.
• After this, don't move to higher level books such as Ceangage as they are actually made for JEE Adv and if you try solving their problems it will consume a lot of time and mind. Also, you will not see much problems from them.
• Instead of that what you need to first do is. Simply watch some online lectures of each chapter not more than 2 hours. Now while preparing first complete these easy chapters first of 11th and 12th:

• In Mathematics: Class 11- Mathematical reasoning, Statistics, Quadratic, Permutation and Combination (don't try questions other than previous year type), Probability & Class 12- Vector, 3-D, application of derivatives (area based and tangent normal problems must do), differential equations (don't go beyond NCERT) etc.
• In Chemistry: Class 11- Structure of atom, Basic concepts of chemistry, ideal gas equation,  Periodic table, Hydrogen, S-block, Environmental Chemistry (Must Do) & Class 12- Solutions, electrochemistry, Chemical kinetics, Chemistry in everyday life, Bio-molecules, Polymer (Only NCERT) etc.
• In Physics: Class 11- Units and measurement, Motion in straight line, Gas Laws, Oscillation and wave (Previous year type only), Thermal properties of matter (only basics), Mechanical Properties of solid, liquid and gas (Only Basics and formulas) & Class 12- Charge, Current electricity, Magnetism, Current Induction and AC, EM waves, Semi-conductors, Atom and Nuclei, Dual nature of atom etc.

Which books you should buy?

Firstly you must have previous year question paper books which you can purchase from market or from e-commerce website such as amazon, flipkart erc.

I will not suggest you buying more books as it will only cost you, but not necessarily required for JEE Main. You must have NCERT of class 11 and 12.
